Easy Living Home Elevators remembers Private Henry Mayer

As a young Mortdale resident, Henry Mayer, left Australia bound for Fromelles, France in 1916 after he enlisted into the Australian Imperial Forces.

Sadly, Private Henry Mayer of the 55th Battalion was killed in the Battle of Fromelles on July 20, 1916, aged 23, one of more than 5500 Diggers who were killed or wounded in what was described as “the worst 24 hours in Australian history”.

On his way to the battlefields of France Henry Mayer along with the Members of the NSW Contingent of the Australian Imperial Force, were issued with a pocket-size New Testament bible. He wrote his name and rank in the Australian Imperial Forces on the inside cover and carried his bible with him and remarkably it travelled from Mortdale to Egypt, England and France. After he was killed, his New Testament bible was sent to relatives in England. Then over 90 years later the bible was found in a local church by Stockport resident Linda Davies (Henrys Birthplace) who was unable to trace any of his relatives in England and sent it to the Hurstville Museum and Gallery for safe keeping. Following this, the Museum and Gallery embarked on their own research for Mayer’s relatives and it was after a story appeared in the Leader, on January 16, 2007, Mr Mayer’s relatives contacted the museum.

But the location of Private Henry Mayer’s grave remained a mystery. When the mass grave of Australian and British soldiers was exhumed at Pheasant Wood, Fromelles in 2009, Henry Mayer’s descendants, including David Mayer provided DNA samples in order for remains to be identified.

The remains of Private Henry Mayer were identified in March and were reinterred with 250 other soldiers in a new Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Fromelles.

Private Mayer’s New Testament was taken back to France to mark 94th anniversary of the World War I Battle of Fromelles. The dedication service of the new cemetery was held in the presence thousands of people including Prince Charles and Australian Governor-General Quentin Bryce.

Currently 11 apprentices are in various stages of their training and we envisage another 3 will be taken on early in the new year including our first apprentice in Western Australia.
